Sunderland secured an unexpected Premier League victory on Sunday, edging Chelsea 1-0 at the Stadium of Light thanks to a controversial first-half penalty from Enzo Le Fée.
The defeat dealt a major blow to Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, whose squad entered the match with an opportunity to climb into the top four ahead of the November international break. Instead, Chelsea dropped its fourth league match in 10 outings under Alonso, remaining in fifth place, according to Agence France-Presse.
Controversy Surrounds Decisive Spot Kick
The game turned in the 36th minute when referee Jarred Gillett awarded Sunderland a penalty. Gillett ruled that Chelsea defender Levi Colwill pulled down Sunderland forward Brian Brobbey as he drove toward the net, Football Muse reported, though both players appeared to be grappling with each other.
Le Fée capitalized on the decision, sending Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders the wrong way from the spot to deliver the game’s lone goal.
Chelsea was left frustrated by the sequence, having argued that an infraction should have been awarded at the other end just moments earlier. Chelsea contended that Luke O’Nien had brought down Cole Palmer, but the foul was ruled to have occurred just outside the penalty area, according to Football Muse. AFP reported that Alonso was furious his team was not awarded a foul on Palmer during the build-up to the Sunderland penalty.
Sunderland Holds Firm Despite Early Blow
The win was Sunderland’s first in the Premier League since August and just its second league victory of the campaign. Under manager Régis Le Bris, the club remained in the relegation zone despite the triumph, Football Muse reported.
Sunderland faced adversity early in the contest when midfielder Granit Xhaka was forced off with an injury inside the opening four minutes. Even without Xhaka, the hosts held Chelsea at bay with resolute defending, while Brobbey remained a physical threat up front.
Alonso altered his tactical setup at halftime, bringing on Estêvão Willian for Colwill and dropping midfielder Moisés Caicedo into central defense. Penders remained in goal throughout the match, as regular starter Emiliano Martínez was deemed not quite ready to start following surgery for a broken jaw, according to Football Muse. Former Sunderland player Jordan Henderson also started the match for the visitors.
Despite controlling possession, Chelsea failed to create consistent scoring opportunities. The London club’s best chance to equalize came in second-half stoppage time, when substitute Danny Welbeck headed an effort over the crossbar.
League Action Across England
Elsewhere in the Premier League on Sunday, Liverpool rebounded from a two-game skid in all competitions with a 3-1 road win against Crystal Palace, AFP reported. Alexis Mac Allister, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak scored for fourth-placed Liverpool, while Eddie Nketiah converted a late penalty for Palace, which dropped to the bottom of the table.
Brighton moved up to second place by defeating Brentford 2-0 at home behind a long-range strike from Diego Gomez and a penalty from Pascal Gross. Brentford played with 10 men for most of the match after Igor Thiago received a first-half red card.
Bournemouth also earned three points on the road, defeating Ipswich 2-1 as Brazilian forward Evanilson scored his seventh goal in eight games.
Chelsea now heads into the international window seeking answers after losing two of its past three Premier League games, while Sunderland will look to build on the momentum to escape the bottom three.
