Real Madrid staged a dramatic late rally to defeat AS Roma 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night, erasing a two-goal deficit in the final minutes of their UEFA Champions League group stage matchup.

Substitute Antonio Rüdiger capped the remarkable comeback in stoppage time by heading in the decisive goal from a corner kick, completing a sequence that saw the Spanish club score three goals across a span of roughly 10 minutes to seize all three points away from home.

Roma seizes control

The Italian hosts took the fight to Real Madrid from the opening whistle, creating several early opportunities that forced Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into decisive saves. Roma eventually broke through in the 20th minute when a deflected, long-range strike from Marten de Roon slipped into the net, according to Sports Illustrated.

Madrid answered back only five minutes later. After Roma failed to effectively clear the ball, Kylian Mbappé pounced on the bouncing rebound to hammer a long-distance strike home, tying the match at 1-1. The strike marked a milestone for the French forward, who became the youngest player to make 100 Champions League appearances, Sports Illustrated reported.

Despite Madrid’s quick equalizer, Roma resumed dominance after halftime. In the 51st minute, a costly turnover by winger Vinícius Júnior allowed Donyell Malen to restore the home side’s lead. Just seven minutes later, Malen doubled his tally with a composed finish that stood following an initial offside check, granting Roma a seemingly commanding 3-1 cushion.

Substitutes spark late turnaround

Faced with a mounting deficit, Madrid manager Jose Mourinho overhauled his lineup with a wave of attacking changes, introducing Arda Güler and Endrick before later bringing on Carlos Espí and Bernardo Silva.

The adjustments shifted the momentum completely. Espí initiated the comeback in the 83rd minute, beating Roma’s defense with a close-range finish. Only two minutes later, Endrick rose to meet an aerial service and leveled the score with a powerful header in the 85th minute, earning official Man of the Match honors for his dynamic display off the bench, according to Managing Madrid.

Güler proved vital as the creative orchestrator during the closing stretch, generating three key passes and two assists across his 37 minutes on the pitch, SB Nation noted. In stoppage time, Güler delivered a pinpoint corner that found Rüdiger, who rose above the defense to nod in the game-winner.

The victory gave Real Madrid two consecutive wins to open their Champions League campaign, masking defensive frailties that plagued the side for the first hour. It remains to be seen whether Mourinho will alter his starting midfield pairing of Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde, which faced sharp media criticism for struggling to withstand Roma’s pressing before tactical shifts rescued the result.
