SAN ANTONIO — The Oklahoma City Thunder step back onto the court Tuesday night to begin their 2026-27 campaign, visiting the San Antonio Spurs in an opening-night contest that pits two Western Conference contenders against each other.

Oklahoma City enters the new season seeking its second championship in three years after claiming the Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2025, The Oklahoman reported. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. on NBC as part of an opening-day tripleheader broadcast by the network, according to Sports Illustrated.

Reshaped Supporting Roster

While the Thunder retained the foundational trio that propelled the franchise to recent heights — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams — the front office engineered significant changes around them over the summer. Oklahoma City traded away several longtime contributors, bidding farewell to Luguentz Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins, The Oklahoman reported.

Those departures scattered key role players across the league. Dort and Wiggins landed with the Atlanta Hawks, where Dort brings defensive toughness to the backcourt, while Joe joined the Detroit Pistons to supply perimeter shooting, according to power rankings published by The Big Lead.

The newly configured Thunder lineup faced early growing pains in exhibition play, finishing the preseason with a 1-4 record. However, analysts at The Big Lead noted that exhibition outcomes remain secondary to keeping Gilgeous-Alexander, Holmgren and Williams healthy, stressing that the Thunder possess the talent required to compete with any opponent when at full strength.

Opening Test in San Antonio

Tuesday’s matchup presents an immediate hurdle against a Spurs squad coming off a run to the NBA Finals last season, where they fell to the New York Knicks, Sports Illustrated reported. Led by Victor Wembanyama and bolstered by veteran forward Tobias Harris, San Antonio posted a 2-3 preseason mark as the franchise seeks to challenge for the league title, according to The Big Lead.

The contest forms part of an experimental slate for the league, Sports Illustrated reported. NBC and Peacock launched Tuesday’s action with an afternoon matinee between the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons at 3 p.m. Eastern, straying from the traditional evening-only format before moving into prime-time games.

A Packed National Showcase

Oklahoma City will remain in the league spotlight throughout the season, with 30 games scheduled for national broadcasts across ABC, ESPN, NBC, Amazon Prime Video and Peacock, The Oklahoman reported. Regional broadcasts will air on the Thunder Gameday Network.

The early schedule offers little relief for Oklahoma City. After facing San Antonio on Tuesday, the Thunder return home to host the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night on ESPN before welcoming the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Oklahoma City will also travel for high-profile road tests before the new year, including a Christmas Day showdown against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis on ABC.

How smoothly Oklahoma City integrates its new additions alongside its established superstar core will determine whether the Thunder can duplicate their 2025 championship success in a crowded Western Conference race.
