PITTSBURGH — Bill Belichick earned the most significant victory of his collegiate coaching tenure as the North Carolina Tar Heels upset previously undefeated No. 25 Pittsburgh 21-17.

The victory gave Belichick his first win over a ranked opponent since taking over the program in August 2025, NBC Sports reported. Now five games into his second year at the helm, the 74-year-old coach has guided the Tar Heels to a 3-2 overall record and a 1-1 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference competition, according to ClutchPoints.

Defensive stops anchor breakthrough win

The Tar Heels entered the contest looking to translate early-season competitiveness into a signature victory. In earlier weeks, North Carolina opened with a win against TCU, built a 17-3 advantage over Clemson before dropping a 28-20 decision, and trailed No. 3 Notre Dame by a single point early in the second half before eventually losing, ClutchPoints reported.

Against Pittsburgh, the Tar Heels relied on critical defensive moments to secure the win. The North Carolina defense registered two sacks, collected two interceptions, and halted the Panthers on all four of their fourth-down conversion attempts, according to ClutchPoints.

Pittsburgh entered the contest without starting quarterback Mason Heintschel, who had reportedly suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament tear in a prior matchup against Virginia Tech, ClutchPoints noted. In his place, backup quarterback Holden Geriner completed 27 of 44 attempts for 219 yards and threw two interceptions as the Panthers dropped to 5-1 on the season.

Offensive production and Belichick’s reaction

Offensively for the Tar Heels, quarterback Billy Edwards connected on 18 of 26 passes for 249 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, ClutchPoints reported. Wide receiver Jordan Shipp served as Edwards' primary target, hauling in six receptions for 93 yards.

Speaking on ESPN following the final whistle, Belichick commended his squad for their resilience against a difficult opponent.

“Gutsy performance. Kept battling against a good football team,” Belichick said on ESPN. “We just kept hanging in there. We made a couple big plays, and they made a couple too. They're a good football team.”

The victory marks tangible progression for a program that posted a 4-8 record during Belichick's debut campaign, lifting his overall mark at North Carolina to 7-9 over 17 games, NBC Sports reported. While the high-profile coaching hire produced growing pains early, the upset over Pittsburgh demonstrates steady strides.

Looking ahead to rivalry matchup

Rather than celebrating the milestone win, Belichick quickly pivoted toward his team's upcoming schedule. Pete Nakos reported on X that the veteran coach emphasized physical recovery and preparation for their next challenge, according to ClutchPoints.

“We've just got to get ready for Duke,” Belichick said in his postgame comments on ESPN.

The Tar Heels will prepare to host or visit their long-standing in-state rival, the Duke Blue Devils, next week as they attempt to maintain momentum and build upon their winning record in ACC play.
