A wild Saturday of college football delivered major shakeups to the national landscape on Oct. 10, headlined by Oklahoma knocking off top-ranked Texas on a last-second field goal at the Cotton Bowl.

The Longhorns entered the rivalry showdown unbeaten and sitting atop the Associated Press Top 25 poll, but the defeat dropped Texas to 4-1 and opened the door for a new team to claim the top spot, Sports Illustrated reported. Texas seized early control behind quarterback Arch Manning, yet the Sooners answered by capitalizing on key defensive takeaways. Oklahoma returned an interception thrown by Manning for a touchdown and later picked him off again in the closing moments to position the game-winning kick as time expired.

Top ranking up for grabs in Tuscaloosa

With Texas tumbling, the road to the No. 1 ranking shifted immediately to Saturday night’s prime-time Southeastern Conference showdown between undefeated No. 2 Georgia and undefeated No. 6 Alabama in Tuscaloosa, according to Sports Illustrated. Both powerhouses entered the matchup with championship aspirations, and the victor was widely expected to vault to the top of Sunday’s updated national polls.

Pregame festivities in Tuscaloosa also faced unusual conditions. Severe weather associated with Hurricane Isaias forced ESPN to move its popular pregame broadcast, “College GameDay,” indoors before the top-10 meeting kicked off, NJ.com reported.

UCLA defense stuns Oregon

Out west, No. 21 UCLA preserved an undefeated start to the season with a gritty 17-15 victory against Oregon in Eugene, Bleacher Report reported. The Bruins improved to 5-0 under head coach Bob Chesney, who continues an impressive turnaround in his first season with the program following a successful run at James Madison.

The Bruins prevailed despite quarterback Nico Iamaleava exiting the game due to an injury and the offense coughing up three turnovers. UCLA’s defensive unit carried the load, forcing seven Oregon turnovers and stifling Ducks backup quarterback Dylan Raiola. Oregon converted just one of 12 third-down attempts, failing to pick up a conversion until late in the fourth quarter. The Bruins sealed the win by stopping running back Jordon Davison on a potential game-tying two-point conversion attempt following a late Oregon rally.

South Carolina routs Florida in Gainesville

In another notable SEC result, South Carolina snapped an eight-game conference skid by delivering a 38-19 rout of No. 16 Florida in Gainesville, according to NJ.com. Entering the game as double-digit home favorites, the Gators suffered their second straight blowout loss to fall to 4-2 on the year.

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers produced a standout performance, accounting for five total touchdowns. Sellers completed 23 of 35 passes for 279 yards and threw four touchdown strikes, finding Nyck Harbor, Mazeo Bennett Jr., Donovan Murph and Lex Cyrus against Florida’s secondary. The victory marked the first win in Gainesville for coach Shane Beamer’s program since 2014 and secured the Gamecocks’ first conference victory since September 2025.

College football voters will release the new AP Top 25 rankings on Sunday, when fans will learn how far Texas and Florida tumble and which undefeated heavyweight claims the coveted No. 1 ranking.
