LEEDS, England — Manchester United held fierce rival Leeds United to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road on Sunday, delivering a gritty defensive showing at the end of a turbulent week for head coach Michael Carrick.

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half before Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalized shortly after the interval. The result marked Manchester United’s third consecutive 1-1 stalemate and stretched its winless run in Premier League action to five matches, leaving the club with seven points through its first seven fixtures of the season.

Tactical shift steadies the defense

Entering Sunday’s match under intense scrutiny following a midweek Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, Carrick adjusted his tactical setup. Manchester United lined up without a recognized central striker, using Mbeumo in an advanced role flanked by Bruno Fernandes and Amad. In midfield, Carlos Baleba partnered with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to disrupt the Leeds buildup, shifting into a five-man defensive line when out of possession.

The adjustments helped the visiting side preserve its long unbeaten league record at Elland Road, where the club has avoided defeat for 24 years. However, defender Harry Maguire acknowledged after the match that the squad still needs to find higher levels of confidence and control when in possession.

“We could have been a bit braver with the ball and taken the ball under pressure,” Maguire told Sky Sports. “But we’re in a circumstance where we are not as brave as we should be, and we have to get that back because to win games for Manchester United we have to have that bravery and composure.”

Maguire added that the squad had spent the week preparing to match Leeds aggressively without the ball, targeting numerical advantages in the middle of the pitch.

Off-field tension and tactical reactions

The fixture capped a fraught period for Carrick’s squad, which had also drawn 1-1 at home against Tottenham before the European setback in Spain. Defender Lisandro Martinez remained in the starting lineup despite an internal controversy during the week that saw him fined after an outburst directed at club transfer executive Jason Wilcox. Martinez, who subsequently apologized, did not return for the second half after sustaining a knock before the break.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Carrick praised the work ethic of his squad while acknowledging room for growth in offensive execution.

“A point is a point. It is a step forward for us,” Carrick said. “Maybe if you talk about top quality, maybe it wasn’t top, top quality I think we are capable of playing. I think in little moments and spells we played some really good football.”

Carrick also disputed suggestions that his players lacked unity, asserting that their dedication remained intact despite recent scrutiny. Leeds head coach Daniel Farke, whose team sits seventh in the Premier League standings, expressed frustration that his side could not capitalize after pulling level.

“We should have kept up the dominance, too many strikes went over the crossbar but it was overall a solid performance,” Farke said. “We should have won the game but we move on.”

Manchester United now prepares to travel to Italy to face Como in European competition on Wednesday, while Leeds looks to maintain its position in the upper half of the league table.
