Liverpool welcomes Manchester City to Anfield on Sunday in the club’s first fixture since an independent commission found the reigning champions guilty of widespread financial violations. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. local time (11:30 a.m. EDT).

The match comes during an unprecedented period of uncertainty for Manchester City. On Sept. 29, the Premier League confirmed the findings of a commission that examined allegations spanning nine seasons from 2009–10 to 2017–18. The panel concluded that City was guilty on 114 of 115 charges, ruling that the club artificially inflated commercial earnings by more than £900 million using misleading or fictitious sponsorship agreements, according to reports published by HEAVY. The commission also upheld three of four charges regarding a failure to cooperate with investigators.

Failed Settlement Discussions and Appeal

Manchester City continues to contest the commission’s findings and has initiated an appeal, claiming the decision contains errors of fact, law and principle. Potential penalties have not yet been determined, but possible sanctions could range from heavy fines and point deductions to outright expulsion from the top flight, HEAVY reported.

Before the decision became public, confidential settlement discussions between Manchester City and the Premier League collapsed, according to reporting by Bloomberg cited by HEAVY. Those private negotiations reportedly explored a resolution centered around a major financial payment rather than sporting penalties such as stripping titles or relegation. However, talks disintegrated quickly because the club maintained its innocence and refused to admit the Premier League’s accusations, Bloomberg reported.

Tension at Anfield and the Title Race

The off-field storm adds sharp friction to an already intense rivalry. Liverpool finished as runner-up to City three times during the period under scrutiny, Sports Illustrated reported, leaving home supporters with an added sense of grievance. Manager Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool squad is looking to build momentum against the league leaders.

On the pitch, Manchester City enters Anfield atop the Premier League table with a spotless record of five victories in five matches, USA TODAY Sports reported. City manager Enzo Maresca said he trusts the club’s leadership and expressed confidence that the team will prevail in its appeal, while star striker Erling Haaland urged supporters to keep smiling heading into the weekend.

Broadcasting reports for the high-profile showdown vary across media listings. In the United States, USA TODAY Sports and Sports Illustrated reported coverage on NBC and Telemundo, alongside streaming on Peacock and Fubo, while an SB Nation match listing identified USA Network. In the United Kingdom, Sky Sports is carrying the game across multiple channels including Sky Sports Main Event, according to Sports Illustrated, while SB Nation listed TNT Sports 1.

What Comes Next

While the Premier League and Manchester City await the next legal steps in the appeals process and any determination on sanctions, both clubs immediately pivot to European competition. Liverpool travels to Austria to play LASK on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Champions League, while Manchester City hosts Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium. Both sides will resume domestic league play on Saturday, Oct. 17.
