Chelsea captain Reece James has had minor surgery on an injured knee, the Premier League club announced on Friday, ruling the 26-year-old defender out of action for the foreseeable future.

James sustained the injury during a team training session and subsequently sat out Chelsea’s 5-1 victory against Bournemouth last weekend. The club confirmed that medical examinations conducted after the training incident determined an operation was necessary.

“Captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery,” Chelsea said in a statement quoted by The Independent. The club added that the defender “has already begun his road to recovery and will be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during this rehabilitation phase.”

No timetable established for return

Chelsea did not reveal the exact medical diagnosis of the knee problem and declined to give an estimated date for when James might be cleared to play again, according to the Associated Press. The right-back had previously withdrawn from international duty with the England national squad before sitting out the Bournemouth fixture at Stamford Bridge.

James started the opening four Premier League matches of the campaign for Chelsea. His most recent appearance came during a 2-2 draw against Hull on Sept. 12, The Independent reported.

The setback comes as Chelsea prepares for a demanding stretch in its schedule. Ranked sixth in the Premier League table, the London club travels to face Everton on Saturday, the Associated Press noted. Following that fixture, Chelsea faces upcoming league matches against rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, alongside a Carabao Cup fixture against Liverpool, according to the BBC.

Lingering physical setbacks

Injuries have repeatedly interrupted James’ career for both club and country. The defender has dealt with multiple knee and hamstring ailments in recent campaigns, missing several international tournaments with England after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the BBC reported.

Prior to the 2026 World Cup, James had dismissed ongoing public discussions regarding his physical durability as “boring,” The Independent reported. Despite an improved fitness record last season, a hamstring issue forced him to miss two tournament matches in England’s run, which concluded with a bronze medal victory after reaching the semifinals, according to reports from the BBC and The Independent.

With James beginning rehabilitation at Chelsea’s Cobham training facility, it remains uncertain when he will be fit to rejoin team activities. His status for England’s next slate of international fixtures, which includes a scheduled Wembley Stadium match against Croatia in early November, also remains unresolved.
