ATLANTA — Quarterback Caleb Williams delivered an exceptionally sharp return from injury on Sunday, directing the Chicago Bears to a 31-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons after missing three consecutive games with a hamstring issue.
Williams connected on his first 12 passes and finished 30 of 36 for 305 yards and one touchdown, according to ABC News. The outing gave Williams the sixth 300-yard passing game of his career, surpassing Mitchell Trubisky for the most 300-yard passing performances by a Bears player before age 25, reporter Courtney Cronin noted.
Flawless Start Sparks Early Dominance
Chicago took control right away on its opening possession, as Williams hit all six of his throws for 64 yards, capped by a 14-yard scoring strike to Colston Loveland. Running back D’Andre Swift added two touchdown runs as the Bears built a commanding 21-7 advantage by halftime and later extended the cushion to 31-7.
Williams explained afterward that watching from the sideline had been difficult. “You’re itching on the sideline during the season,” Williams said, according to ABC News. “I’ve had a hamstring injury before, but it was at the end of the year. I had three weeks to be able to get back and play. And so being able sit back and recover, recover, recover … and when I get back just to show who I am and who we are.”
The quarterback told reporters he “felt comfortable from the rip.” Next Gen Stats showed Williams went 24 of 24 for 248 yards when throwing from a clean pocket, establishing the highest number of attempts without an incompletion from a clean pocket in an NFL game since at least 2018, SB Nation reported. His 83.3 percent completion rate set a franchise single-game record for passers with at least 30 attempts, according to the outlet.
Swift finished with 44 yards on 16 carries, while Roschon Johnson added 51 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts. Luther Burden III paced Chicago receivers with eight receptions for 95 yards.
Late Rally and Defensive Stand
Atlanta fought back in the fourth quarter behind quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who played despite dealing with a rib issue suffered the previous week. Penix connected on 19 of 33 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns, finding Kyle Pitts for two scores and Jahan Dotson for another. A pair of successful 2-point conversions trimmed Chicago’s lead to 31-23 with under six minutes remaining.
Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski lamented his team’s sluggish opening, saying, “We talked at length about starting fast in this ball game, and we did not. That’s on me and our and our staff.” Penix noted that playing from behind limited running back Bijan Robinson, who received only nine carries for 61 yards.
Chicago’s defense stood firm when needed. Cornerback Kyler Gordon, activated from the physically unable to perform list before kickoff following a calf injury, recorded three sacks and forced two fumbles. With 2:54 remaining, Gordon strip-sacked Penix, and Devin Bush recovered the loose ball at the Atlanta 28-yard line to extinguish the comeback.
The Bears withstood 12 penalties totaling 133 yards, as well as the fourth-quarter ejection of wide receiver Jahdae Walker for head-butting Atlanta’s Chris Blair.
Atlanta suffered several injuries, most notably to inside linebacker Kendal Daniels, who was taken off on a stretcher during the third quarter with a neck injury. The Falcons announced Daniels was alert, retained movement in all extremities, and was transported to Grady Hospital for medical evaluation.
Now 4-2, the Bears face a short turnaround before hosting the New England Patriots on Thursday night. The 2-4 Falcons will look to rebound when they host the San Francisco 49ers next Sunday.
