Samsung tests premium tablet pricing with Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra

With a starting price of $1,399, Samsung Electronics is betting advanced artificial intelligence tools and bundled software can justify rising costs in a narrowing Android tablet market.

Samsung Electronics is making a high-stakes bet on premium hardware and artificial intelligence with its latest flagship tablet lineup, even as high price tags push consumers to evaluate more affordable alternatives.

The South Korean technology giant introduced the Galaxy Tab S12 series, featuring the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra alongside the Galaxy Tab S12+, Yahoo Finance reported. While BGR noted an initial unveiling of the lineup in September, Yahoo Finance reported the formal launch occurred on Oct. 9 following an Oct. 7 retail release. The flagship Ultra model enters the market with a starting price of $1,399, positioning it among the most expensive consumer tablets available.

High-end specifications and creative tools

To justify the premium price point, Samsung outfitted the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra with top-tier hardware and specialized software partnerships. The tablet includes an ultra-thin frame, an IP68 certification for water and dust resistance, a 3D vapor chamber for thermal regulation, and up to 23 hours of battery life, according to BGR.

Under the hood, both models in the S12 family run on the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 processor, a chip co-developed by MediaTek and Samsung specifically for the line, Yahoo Finance reported. The silicon supports on-device artificial intelligence features under the Galaxy AI banner. In another industry first, Samsung confirmed that Adobe Photoshop comes pre-installed on the devices, marking the software’s debut as an out-of-the-box inclusion on an Android slate.

Yahoo Finance noted that the integration of the Dimensity chip and pre-loaded creative applications represents a broader strategic effort to transform tablets from passive entertainment screens into functional workstations capable of sustaining higher average selling prices.

Budget pressure and a shrinking field of rivals

The steep $1,399 entry price makes the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra an expensive investment, to the point where Apple’s latest iPad Pro M5 could serve as a cheaper alternative, BGR reported. For shoppers who prefer the Android operating system to match their smartphones or non-Apple computers, price-conscious options exist within Samsung’s own roster, including the Galaxy Tab S12+, as well as devices manufactured by Lenovo and TCL.

Finding alternatives has become increasingly complicated for shoppers, however. BGR reported that the overall Android tablet market has contracted in recent years, with Google entirely abandoning its tablet operations and OnePlus pulling back from both the U.S. and European markets.

What comes next for Samsung

Financial analysts are monitoring whether consumer demand will validate the company’s focus on premium, AI-heavy mobile hardware. Yahoo Finance reported that the early retail sales window following the October rollout will serve as an immediate test of the strategy.

Market watchers are expected to scrutinize Samsung Electronics’ upcoming quarterly financial earnings report, where tablet shipment volumes, revenue contributions, and product mix data will reveal whether shoppers are willing to pay top dollar for high-end AI slates.
