NEW YORK — Prime Video announced Friday that its upcoming historical drama series “Bloodaxe” will premiere worldwide on Jan. 20, 2027. The streaming service unveiled the release date alongside a first teaser trailer and promotional artwork during a panel presentation at New York Comic Con.

All eight episodes of the first season will drop simultaneously across more than 240 countries and territories, according to entertainment reports. The project marks the return of “Vikings” creator Michael Hirst to Norse storytelling, alongside co-creator and writer Horatio Hirst.

A 10th-century fight for the Norwegian throne

Set during the 10th century, “Bloodaxe” fits historically between Hirst’s original “Vikings” series, which aired from 2013 to 2021, and its sequel “Vikings: Valhalla,” Variety reported. The new drama centers on the historical Norse figure Erik Bloodaxe, portrayed by Xavier Molyneux, and his wife Gunnhild, known as the Mother of Kings, played by Jessica Madsen.

The debut season charts the couple’s ascent and fierce campaign to secure the throne of Norway. Their struggle unfolds against a backdrop of internal betrayals and regional warfare, drawing in rival Scandinavian monarchs as well as an English ruler. Footage showcased at the Comic Con panel highlights a central clash of cultures and beliefs between Erik, who defends traditional pagan customs and deities, and his half-brother Haakon, who adopts Christianity after years in England, Nerdist reported.

Alongside Molyneux and Madsen, the cast includes Levi Miller, Karlis Arnolds Avots, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte and Jesper Christensen.

Second season already underway in Ireland

MGM Television produces the drama, with Michael and Horatio Hirst serving as executive producers and showrunners. Executive producers also include Morgan O’Sullivan through O’Sullivan Productions, Steve Stark via Toluca Pictures, Arturo Interian, John Weber and Sheila Hockin.

Even before viewers see the series premiere, Amazon has already committed to expanding the story. A second season is currently filming in Ireland, Deadline reported. Production recently added several new performers to the second-season roster, including Maddy Ambus, Steven Brand and Lasse Steen.

Streaming executives have not yet announced a broadcast timetable for the second installment.
