NEW YORK — Actor Nicolas Cage told attendees at a New York Comic Con panel Saturday morning that he intends to star in the upcoming fifth season of the HBO anthology crime series “True Detective.”
Appearing at a career spotlight event, Cage discussed the challenges of balancing film commitments with work in television before naming the acclaimed drama. The remarks effectively confirmed industry reports that had linked the Academy Award winner to the production since last year.
“You can only do so many movies back to back to back, and necessity is the mother of invention,” Cage said, according to Entertainment Weekly. He explained that balancing work allows him to “feed the family” without overextending on consecutive film shoots, adding, “So I think I’m probably gonna do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective.”
The announcement drew immediate cheers from the convention audience, prompting Cage to joke, “That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right?” Representatives for HBO declined to comment on his remarks, TheWrap reported.
New setting in Jamaica Bay
Issa López, who wrote and served as showrunner on the fourth season, titled “True Detective: Night Country,” is returning to helm the fifth installment. While the previous season tracked an investigation in Ennis, Alaska, the next mystery is set around Jamaica Bay in New York, according to media reports.
Industry reporting first surfaced in August linking Cage to the lead role of New York detective Henry Logan. When asked about the project in May, Cage indicated that discussions were preliminary. At the time, he noted that he was not officially signed but expressed great enthusiasm about collaborating with López.
López previously told TheWrap that while the fifth season moves to New York, it will exist within the same fictional universe as the Alaska storyline and retain her characteristic elements of magical realism. Cage would follow an established lineage of high-profile actors who have headlined the franchise, including Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Mahershala Ali and Jodie Foster.
Criticism of studio AI practices
Cage’s television comments arrived following the cancellation of “Spider-Noir,” a Prime Video series in which he portrayed a detective figure. During the Comic Con panel, Cage sharply criticized streaming backer Amazon over its relationship with artificial intelligence, Deadline reported.
Referring to investments in the technology sector, Cage labeled Amazon “a very AI-friendly company” and stated that he refused to sign an AI waiver for the production. “I am not an AI-friendly actor,” Cage said, adding that he will probably not work with the studio again. He noted that he prefers collaborating with rising independent creators who make projects “by hand” from the ground up.
Cage is currently filming the feature “Perish.” HBO has not yet released an official production schedule or a formal casting announcement confirming when filming for the new season of “True Detective” will begin.
