Amazon MGM Studios is developing a new television series based on the “Stargate” science-fiction franchise with “WandaVision” creator Jac Schaeffer, according to industry reports published Friday.

The project arrives under an overall television pact that Schaeffer signed with Amazon MGM earlier this year, Variety first reported. Safehouse Pictures producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell are set to executive produce the revival alongside Schaeffer. Spokespeople for Schaeffer and Amazon declined to comment on the project, Variety said.

A second chance at reviving the franchise

The development effort marks Amazon’s second attempt to bring “Stargate” back to television screens since completing its $8.5 billion purchase of MGM in 2022. The sci-fi universe was among the prominent properties the studio sought to adapt following the acquisition, Deadline reported.

Prime Video previously ordered a separate revival series in November 2025 spearheaded by Martin Gero, a writer and producer who worked on prior installments in the television franchise. However, that version was abruptly halted in June despite completing a 20-week writers’ room and advancing into pre-production in the United Kingdom, according to Deadline. Gizmodo reported that studio executives feared Gero’s take was too niche and would not draw enough viewers outside the existing core fanbase.

Plans for the new iteration are already advancing. Variety reported that a writers’ room is expected to assemble soon, while Deadline reported that writing work has already commenced in New York.

From the Marvel universe to interstellar portals

Schaeffer built broad industry acclaim as the creator and showrunner of Marvel Studios’ 2021 miniseries “WandaVision” on Disney+. The superhero drama earned 23 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and widespread critical praise. She subsequently created the spinoff series “Agatha All Along,” which brought back Kathryn Hahn in the starring role, serving as writer, director, and showrunner. Her earlier screenwriting credits include the comedy “The Hustle” and Disney’s animated short “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.”

Executive producer Harold has also worked extensively in major sci-fi and fantasy properties, having previously developed the Disney+ series “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

The “Stargate” franchise originated with the 1994 feature film directed by Roland Emmerich and written alongside Dean Devlin. The movie starred Kurt Russell and James Spader as members of an expedition that unlocked an ancient Egyptian device capable of opening instantaneous wormholes to planets across the universe.

The film quickly grew into a sprawling television universe under Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Its first television continuation, “Stargate SG-1,” debuted in 1997 and spanned 10 seasons. The show starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. Multiple follow-ups followed, including the five-season spinoff “Stargate Atlantis,” the darker series “Stargate Universe,” and the animated show “Stargate Infinity.” The televised universe has remained dormant since the cancellation of “Stargate Universe” in 2011.

Plot details and casting for Schaeffer’s version have not yet been announced, and Amazon has not set a formal release window for the series.
