Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank announced Wednesday that she is pregnant with her third child at age 52, sharing the news in a social media video alongside her family.

Swank revealed the pregnancy on Instagram in a clip featuring her husband, entrepreneur Philip Schneider, and their 3-year-old twins, Aya and Ohm. In the video, the family wore glow sticks taped to their clothing, with an additional miniature glow-stick figure positioned over Swank’s abdomen to highlight her growing baby bump. Swank captioned the announcement by noting that while people had frequently inquired about her next career endeavor, “this one releases in December.”

First public appearance following announcement

On Thursday, Swank made her first public appearance following the reveal, greeting onlookers in New York City with an exposed baby bump beneath a white top, low-rise jeans and a knit cardigan. Outlets offered differing details on her studio stop, with the New York Post reporting she was departing a taping of “The Drew Barrymore Show,” while the Daily Mail reported she was seen leaving “CBS Today.”

According to the Daily Mail, Swank chatted with fans outside the Manhattan studios and mentioned that her recent pregnancy cravings have consisted of “Rice Krispies and cheese.” Representatives for the actress did not immediately return requests for comment, the Daily Mail noted.

Following her post, Swank responded directly to supporters who expressed amazement and encouragement regarding her pregnancy in her 50s. After one commenter shared that Swank’s experience offered hope for starting a family later in life, the actress replied, “I always go by the adage, things happen in their time, not ours, and that has always been the case for me,” as reported by TheWrap. Swank added that having patience had often been the most challenging part of the process.

Motherhood in her late 40s and beyond

Swank previously gave birth to her twins in April 2023 at age 48. She and Schneider have been married since August 2018; news reports cited different ages for Schneider, with the New York Post listing him at 52 and the Daily Mail reporting him as 53.

The “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Million Dollar Baby” star has frequently spoken about the realities and advantages of becoming a parent later in life. In a 2024 interview with Business Insider, Swank explained that waiting until her late 40s provided her with greater patience, flexibility and career stability, enabling her to take an extended maternity leave without feeling pressure to return to work immediately. She noted that establishing her acting career earlier gave her the freedom to prioritize her family.

“I’m a very different parent than I would’ve been, even in my early 40s,” Swank told Women’s Health magazine in November 2025, according to the New York Post. While she noted that she previously froze her eggs and had hoped to start a family earlier, she described her late 40s as the right period for everything to fall into place.

Medical authorities classify pregnancies occurring at age 35 and older as advanced maternal age, which carries higher risks of complications such as elevated blood pressure, Business Insider reported. Swank has not publicly commented on medical specifics regarding her current pregnancy, and the sex of the child due in December has not been disclosed.
