MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford after publicly criticizing the club’s hierarchy following a 2-0 Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Speaking to Amazon Prime at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, the 28-year-old center-back openly questioned whether manager Michael Carrick received adequate support during the summer transfer window, directing his frustration toward technical director Jason Wilcox.

“I expect more from our technical director,” Martinez said. “I would have to be honest, as the players, we have to do more, but it’s just important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night.”

When asked if Carrick had received sufficient backing in the transfer market, the Argentine international responded, “I don’t think so,” adding that United did not possess “the best squad at the moment compared with other top teams.” Martinez also cautioned against frequent managerial turnover, asking, “what about other areas?”

Dressing Room Tension and Contract Uncertainty

The post-match comments created immediate friction inside the club. An unnamed teammate confronted Martinez following the match in Madrid, and others were left bemused and angry by the public critique, according to reports from Football Today and The Athletic. Other players, however, quietly shared his frustrations regarding the squad’s composition, The Athletic reported.

Martinez attempted to diffuse the situation Wednesday evening by issuing a statement clarifying that his comments came from a place of personal hurt and sincere concern for the team. Despite that explanation, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Wilcox were displeased by the remarks, and the defender is widely expected to face an internal fine, The Athletic reported.

The controversy arrives as Martinez enters the final year of his contract, which is set to expire next summer. While United holds a club option to trigger a one-year extension through June 2028, Sky Sports reported that serious internal doubts have emerged over whether the team will exercise that clause.

According to The Athletic, Martinez does not want the club to activate the extension and would prefer to depart as a free agent, with Spain seen as his preferred destination. People close to the defender told The Athletic that his remarks were not a calculated attempt to force an exit and noted that he has sought an improved contract since winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.

Defensive Strain Ahead of Leeds Derby

The sudden fallout leaves Carrick managing a delicate squad dilemma during a difficult start to the campaign, in which United has earned just six points from its first six Premier League matches, Last Word on Sports reported. United’s defensive options have already been depleted by injuries and suspensions.

  • Ayden Heaven was forced to start out of position at left-back against Atletico Madrid.
  • Leny Yoro faces a one-match European suspension after receiving a red card in Madrid.
  • Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui remain sidelined or limited by fitness concerns.
  • Harry Maguire’s playing time continues to be closely monitored at age 33.

Club recruitment officials are already evaluating prospective signings at center-back and left-back ahead of upcoming transfer windows, according to EPL Index and Football Today. Martinez had previously attracted interest from Atletico Madrid during the summer, though no formal bid materialized.

United has not yet announced formal disciplinary sanctions against Martinez, leaving it uncertain whether the starting center-back will be included in the lineup for Sunday’s derby against Leeds United.
