PC players may not need to wait years to play the next installment of Grand Theft Auto, according to a report from gaming outlet GamesBeat. Four industry sources familiar with Rockstar Games’ release roadmap said the company aims to launch “Grand Theft Auto 6” on PC during the first quarter of 2027.
The title is scheduled to debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on Nov. 19. If the projected PC timeline holds, the computer port would arrive by the end of March 2027, just a few months after the console premiere.
A shorter turnaround than previous releases
The reported timeframe marks a significant departure from Rockstar’s traditional PC release strategy. The studio historically delayed PC editions of major titles well past their console debuts. “Grand Theft Auto 5” launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013 but did not arrive on PC until April 2015. Similarly, “Red Dead Redemption 2” took more than a year to transition to computer systems after hitting consoles.
Technical hurdles and optimization across diverse computer components often lengthen development cycles for PC conversions. However, industry observers have also noted that staggering releases can boost revenue by encouraging dedicated players to purchase console editions before buying PC versions later.
A representative for Rockstar Games did not immediately respond to inquiries about the reported schedule, CNET reported.
Strategic incentives for a faster PC launch
Several financial and strategic considerations may be pushing Rockstar and parent firm Take-Two Interactive toward an accelerated PC rollout. Tom’s Hardware noted that production costs for the game are estimated to have exceeded $2 billion, creating immense pressure to recoup capital across every available platform quickly.
Furthermore, analysts project blockbuster consumer interest, forecasting $3 billion to $5 billion in revenue during launch week alone, according to CNET. Expanding to the growing global PC audience could amplify those returns, especially with research firm Newzoo projecting the PC gaming population will surpass 1 billion participants by 2028.
Online multiplayer capabilities also play an essential role. The current “Grand Theft Auto Online” has generated more than $5 billion in lifetime revenue and pulls in more than $1 million daily. Observers point out that PC communities are critical to the franchise’s longevity, particularly for customized roleplaying servers. Rockstar previously acquired the development group behind roleplaying platform FiveM and recently integrated roleplaying capabilities into its proprietary launcher.
Release pressures and upcoming hurdles
The console launch arrives after a development phase burdened by public controversies and security compromises. Earlier disclosures revealed the upcoming game will lack physical discs on consoles and will lock select vehicle customizations and apparel options behind a $100 edition, CNET reported.
Rockstar has also grappled with ongoing leaks. A hacker entity known as CyberLeek has posted unauthorized footage and promoted cryptocurrency tokens, while threatening broader disclosures unless specific financial demands are satisfied, according to Tom’s Hardware.
Whether Rockstar can keep to the reported early 2027 window remains unconfirmed by the company. Meanwhile, competing video game publishers may closely track the PC date, as multiple major titles slated for early 2027 could shift schedules to avoid clashing with the franchise.
