PHILADELPHIA — The Carolina Hurricanes continued their early-season surge on Sunday night, pulling away with a three-goal second period to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

The victory was Carolina’s fifth in a row, elevating the club to a 5-1-1 record and the top spot in the NHL standings, according to SB Nation. Philadelphia dropped to 0-5-2, marking the worst season opening in franchise history, ESPN reported.

Carolina breaks through in the second period

Following a scoreless opening frame, the Hurricanes seized control midway through the second period. Andrei Svechnikov opened the scoring with an unassisted blast, SB Nation reported. Just three minutes later, defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere capitalized on a blind feed from Sebastian Aho to widen the margin to 2-0.

Philadelphia briefly countered when Christian Dvorak deflected a point shot from Nick Seeler past Carolina netminder Pyotr Kochetkov, Sportsnaut reported. However, the Hurricanes answered before the second intermission when Aho buried a feed from William Carrier to make it 3-1.

Mark Jankowski capped the scoring 15 minutes into the third period, deflecting a pass from Jordan Martinook. The helper marked Martinook’s 200th career point with Carolina, while Jankowski extended his goal streak to four consecutive games, a personal best.

Carolina dominated puck possession throughout the contest, outshooting Philadelphia in every frame for a total advantage of 30-19. Kochetkov stopped 18 of 19 shots to improve his personal record to 3-0-0 this season, SB Nation noted.

Flyers spiral to historic slump

Carolina earned the win despite playing without team captain Jordan Staal, who was sidelined by what Sportsnaut reported as a lower-body injury. Staal participated in pregame warmups but was kept out of action, leaving Jankowski to center the third forward unit.

Philadelphia entered the matchup missing key skaters of its own, including forward Travis Konecny and defensemen Cam York and Rasmus Ristolainen, Philly Hockey Now reported. The Flyers were coming off a 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday night and struggled to generate offense, managing only two points from offseason signee Trevor Zegras across the first seven contests, according to ESPN.

In the closing minutes of Sunday’s loss, frustrated spectators at Xfinity Mobile Arena chanted for the dismissal of head coach Rick Tocchet, ESPN reported. Across seven games, the Flyers have been outscored 28-8.

“I think we go off the rails at certain points of the game,” Tocchet told reporters after the game, according to ESPN. “I don’t know if it’s experience, pressure, I don’t know.”

Flyers captain Sean Couturier acknowledged the team must correct its trajectory immediately. “We have a lot of talent, but we can’t skill ourselves out of it,” Couturier said, as reported by ESPN. “We’re going to have to work and grind, and it starts the next practice.”

Looking ahead

The Hurricanes will take Monday off before returning home to face the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, SB Nation reported. Philadelphia remains in search of its first victory of the season as team management weighs potential minor-league call-ups from its prospect pool, Philly Hockey Now reported.
