Chelsea secured a commanding 5-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth on Saturday at Stamford Bridge, with Jordan Henderson and Joao Pedro each scoring twice to lead the hosts back to winning ways in the Premier League.

The Blues, playing their first match in 22 days following a three-week international break and a prior 3-0 loss to Brentford, took control from the opening whistle, The 4th Official reported. Henderson gave Chelsea the lead just two minutes into the contest with a composed finish, and Morgan Rogers doubled the advantage only a minute later. Head coach Xabi Alonso’s side took a comfortable 2-0 lead into the halftime interval.

Second-half scoring surge

Chelsea wasted little time extending the lead after the restart. Pedro found the back of the net in the 46th minute to make it 3-0, according to match details from The 4th Official. Bournemouth striker Evanilson pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 51st minute, briefly narrowing the deficit to 3-1.

Chelsea responded with a decisive push midway through the second half. Pedro restored the three-goal cushion by scoring his second goal of the match in the 67th minute, and Henderson followed with his second strike three minutes later to finalize the 5-1 scoreline. Henderson also recorded an assist during the match, The 4th Official reported.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Alonso praised his team’s focus and Henderson’s contributions across the pitch. “I think that today was a very complete performance,” Alonso said, as reported by Hayters TV. “We were in control for most of the parts of the game, so I’m happy with that.”

Alonso addressed Henderson’s output after the veteran midfielder delivered two goals. “We signed him for everything,” Alonso said, according to Hayters TV. “If he’s able to score two beauties as today, we are more than happy for him. But apart from the goals, he’s done many, many good things.”

James sidelined as lineup reshapes

Chelsea’s victory arrived with mixed news on the injury front. Midfielder Moises Caicedo made his first start of the season in Alonso’s 3-4-3 formation after recovering from a calf issue, according to We Ain’t Got No History and The Chelsea News. Cole Palmer and Pedro also started after overcoming recent fitness concerns that had sidelined them from national team duty.

However, club captain Reece James missed the fixture entirely due to a knee issue that arose before kickoff. James had previously been dealing with hamstring trouble before feeling discomfort ahead of the match, Hayters TV reported.

“Yeah, he felt something but after we did the tests later in the afternoon and he had some little issues on the knee so we need to check how long it will be,” Alonso said, according to Hayters TV. “We will assess it week by week.”

Chelsea’s starting lineup also featured Josh Acheampong, Levi Colwill, and Maxence Lacroix along the back line, with Marco Palestra making the substitutes’ bench for the first time since preseason, We Ain’t Got No History reported.

Chelsea medical personnel will now monitor James’ knee on a weekly basis to establish a recovery timeline, while Bournemouth continues its search for a first league win of the campaign.
