LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Florida State football coach Mike Norvell shouldered the blame for an “extremely poor performance” after his team relinquished an early two-score lead in a 44-20 loss to Louisville on Friday night.
The Seminoles jumped out to a 14-0 advantage in the first quarter behind two touchdowns from quarterback Ashton Daniels, Bleacher Report reported. However, Louisville answered by scoring 35 consecutive points, handing Florida State another road setback and dropping the program to 3-3 on the season. Outlets differed on the length of the program’s road skid: FSU Wire and Sports Illustrated reported the defeat marked Florida State’s 11th consecutive road loss, while the Orlando Sentinel reported the streak at 13 consecutive away games.
The Goal-Line Turning Point
The turning point arrived early in the second quarter. Leading by two touchdowns, Florida State drove inside the Louisville 5-yard line. Facing fourth-and-goal at the 2-yard line, Norvell opted against a field goal attempt and kept the offense on the field. Daniels threw a pass to freshman Jasen Lopez, who was tackled behind the line of scrimmage for a turnover on downs, FSU Wire reported.
On the next snap, Louisville running back Isaac Brown sprinted 97 yards for a touchdown. The Orlando Sentinel reported the play was the longest rushing touchdown conceded in Florida State history. In postgame remarks, Norvell referred to the sequence as a 98-yard touchdown.
Norvell defended his decision to pursue the touchdown on fourth down. “We felt good about the play, still feel good about the thought process of it,” Norvell said in his postgame press conference, which was shared on YouTube by Warchant. “Unfortunately, we didn’t do a good enough job in that moment.”
Defensive Struggles and Discipline Issues
Louisville dominated the ground game following the momentum shift. Brown finished the night with 235 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, Bleacher Report reported. The Orlando Sentinel tallied Louisville’s team rushing output at 397 yards, while Norvell cited a figure of 400 rushing yards when speaking to reporters.
“Too many times, we didn’t show the detail, the discipline, the mental toughness that’s necessary on the road,” Norvell said, according to Bleacher Report. “And it starts with me.”
On offense, Daniels completed 21 of 37 passes for 209 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, Bleacher Report reported. That output followed a win over Virginia the previous week in which Daniels set a school record with five rushing touchdowns, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
What Comes Next for Florida State
The loss intensifies scrutiny surrounding Norvell’s tenure. According to Bleacher Report, Norvell held a .532 winning percentage as Florida State’s head coach entering the game. The Orlando Sentinel reported that Norvell has a buyout of approximately $49 million, complicating any potential administrative moves.
Florida State faces a demanding schedule in the weeks ahead. The Seminoles return to action on Oct. 17 with a rivalry matchup on the road against fourth-ranked Miami, followed by games that include Clemson, No. 25 Pittsburgh and No. 16 Florida, Bleacher Report noted.
