This Privacy Policy explains how US Now (“we,” “us” or “our”) collects, uses and shares information when you visit our website at usnow.us (the “Site”), and the choices you have. By using the Site, you agree to this policy.

Information we collect

Information you give us. When you email us or send a message through the form on our Contact page, for example a question, a news tip, a correction or an advertising inquiry, we receive your name, your email address and anything else you choose to include. Messages sent through the form are also stored in our website’s message inbox, which only our staff can open, until we have handled and deleted them.

Information collected automatically. Like most websites, we and our partners automatically receive technical information when you visit, such as your browser and device type, the pages you view, the website that referred you, and an approximate location derived from your IP address.

Our own analytics. We measure how readers use the Site with analytics software that runs on our own servers. This information is not sent to or shared with outside analytics companies. It records the pages you view, how long a page is actively read and how far you scroll, the links, ads and sponsored items you click and where on the page you click, the website or ad campaign that brought you here, and general device details such as device type, browser, operating system, screen size and, when our network provider supplies it, your country and state.

To recognize a returning browser, our analytics stores a randomly generated visitor ID in a first-party cookie for up to one year. The ID is not linked to your name or email address, and we never record anything you type into forms. Your IP address is used only briefly, to filter out abuse and automated traffic, and is not stored in our analytics records. When your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, we do not measure your visits at all. We may also use Google Analytics, which sets its own cookies.

You can turn off measurement of your visits on this browser here:

Your visits help us understand which stories readers find useful. We count them with a random visitor ID kept in a cookie on this browser. We never record your name, email or anything you type, and we don't store your IP address.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. We and our partners use cookies, local storage and similar technologies to keep the Site working, remember preferences such as dark mode, measure readership and show advertising. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; some features may not work as intended if you do.

Our own analytics uses these first-party cookies:

  • usn_vid: a random visitor ID that lets us recognize a returning browser. It expires after one year.
  • usn_sid: a random visit ID that groups the pages you view during one visit. It expires after 30 minutes without activity.
  • usn_optout: remembers that you turned off measurement of your visits. It expires after one year.

Our analytics also keeps a few technical values in your browser’s session storage, which is cleared when you close the tab. People who sign in to manage the Site receive additional cookies that keep them signed in.

Advertising

The Site is supported by advertising. We work with third-party advertising partners, which may include Google AdSense and other advertising networks. These partners may use cookies, web beacons and similar technologies to collect information about your visits to this and other websites in order to show ads, including ads based on your interests, and to measure how ads perform.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
  • You may opt out of personalized advertising from Google by visiting Google Ads Settings. Learn more at How Google uses cookies in advertising.
  • You can opt out of many other vendors’ interest-based ads at aboutads.info and networkadvertising.org.

Sponsored content and promotions on the Site are always labeled. See our Sponsored Content Policy.

Push notifications

If you choose to get news alerts from us, your browser gives us a push address and encryption keys so we can send notifications to that browser through its push service, which is run by Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft depending on your browser. With them we store your browser and device type, your time zone and language, the topics you picked, and counts of the alerts delivered to and opened on that browser. We use your time zone so we don’t send alerts in the middle of the night. We don’t ask for or store your name or email address.

You can turn alerts off at any time with the bell icon on the Site (choose “Manage alerts,” then “Turn off alerts”) or in your browser’s settings for the Site. When you turn them off, or when your browser’s push service tells us the address no longer works, we delete it and everything stored with it. If a browser hasn’t opened any of our alerts in a long time, we pause alerts to it.

How we use information

  • To operate, secure and improve the Site.
  • To understand which stories readers find useful.
  • To show and measure advertising.
  • To respond to your messages, tips and requests.
  • To comply with the law and protect our rights and our readers.

How we share information

We share information with service providers that help us run the Site (such as hosting and security), with advertising and analytics partners as described above, when required by law or to protect rights and safety, and in connection with a merger, sale or other business transfer. We do not sell personal information for money.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over your personal information. Residents of California (under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended), and of a growing number of other states including Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas and Oregon, may have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we collect and how we use and share it, and get a copy of it.
  • Ask us to correct or delete personal information.
  • Opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information and of targeted advertising, as those terms are defined in state law. Some sharing with advertising partners may count as a sale or sharing under these laws; see Do not sell or share my personal information below.
  • Not be treated differently for exercising these rights.

To make a request, email info@usnow.us or choose “Privacy request” in the form on our Contact page. We will verify your request before acting on it, and you may use an authorized agent. If we decline your request, you may appeal by replying to our decision.

Do not sell or share my personal information

When our advertising partners use cookies and similar technologies on the Site to show you ads based on your interests, that may count as a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information, or as targeted advertising, under some state privacy laws. You can opt out in any of these ways:

  • Turn on Global Privacy Control. Many browsers and browser extensions can send this signal. We treat it as a request to opt out for that browser: our own analytics stops measuring your visits, and any Google tags on the Site are set to turn off ad personalization.
  • Contact us. Email info@usnow.us with “Do Not Sell or Share” in the subject line, or choose “Privacy request” in the form on our Contact page. You do not need an account to opt out.
  • Use industry opt-out tools. Google Ads Settings, aboutads.info and networkadvertising.org let you opt out of interest-based ads from Google and many other companies.

You can also opt out on this browser with this switch. Once you opt out, here or with Global Privacy Control, our advertising partners’ ad code no longer loads during your visits, so they receive no information about them from us:

Turn on JavaScript to use this switch, or email info@usnow.us to opt out.

A choice made through your browser applies only to that browser and device, so repeat it on each browser you use.

Children’s privacy

The Site is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Data retention and security

We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes described here or as required by law:

  • Analytics: detailed click and event records are deleted after 90 days, and records of individual visits after 365 days. Daily totals that contain no information about individual visitors are kept.
  • Messages: contact form messages stay in our message inbox until we have handled them, then are deleted. Emails you send us are kept only as long as we need them to respond and follow up.

We use reasonable safeguards to protect information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

Links to other websites

Our stories and ads link to other websites. Their privacy practices are their own, so please review their policies.

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
