KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs preserved their perfect start to the season Sunday, leaning on a relentless defensive effort and a balanced offensive attack to beat the division rival Los Angeles Chargers 22-6 at Arrowhead Stadium.
Coming off their bye week, the Chiefs advanced to 5-0 while keeping Los Angeles completely out of the end zone. Kansas City outgained the Chargers 422 yards to 259, as reported by SB Nation, forcing two turnovers and generating consistent pressure against a depleted Los Angeles front.
Defense Dominates Shorthanded Chargers
Kansas City entered the matchup seeking to jumpstart its pass rush after a three-game drought without a sack, according to Roundtable Sports. Defensive end George Karlaftis led the charge, tallying a sack, three hits on the quarterback, two tackles for loss and a pair of batted passes, SB Nation reported.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert faced intense pressure throughout the afternoon while operating behind a banged-up offensive line missing tackles Joe Alt and Kayode Awosika, The Big Lead reported. Los Angeles was also without standout safety Derwin James and cornerback Donte Jackson. Herbert’s afternoon grew tougher when Chiefs linebacker Jack Cochrane picked off an errant throw under pressure and returned it 48 yards into the red zone.
Los Angeles managed only two field goals all afternoon, dropping the franchise to an 0-6 record on the year.
Walker Powers Offense Amid Passing Injuries
With wide receivers Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton sidelined by injuries, the Chiefs relied heavily on running back Kenneth Walker III. Walker carried 21 times for nearly 140 total yards, highlighted by a 33-yard touchdown scamper on a third-and-1 play, SB Nation reported. Walker currently paces the NFL in rushing yards this season.
Through the air, Patrick Mahomes leaned on second-year wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who caught all seven of his targets for 73 yards. Tight ends Travis Kelce and Noah Gray added 53 receiving yards apiece, with Kelce suiting up despite battling through an ankle ailment.
The victory was not without mistakes for Kansas City. Mahomes tossed an interception in the end zone shortly after Cochrane’s turnover return, and the offense was stopped on a fourth-and-goal try from the 1-yard line. Kicker Harrison Butker also missed an extra point and a field goal attempt.
Uncertainty Surrounds Chargers Staff
The sixth straight defeat amplified scrutiny surrounding the Los Angeles coaching staff. Josh Alper of Pro Football reported a “growing buzz” that the Chargers may dismiss first-year offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, according to Roundtable Sports. Los Angeles has totaled only 84 points across its six losses.
When questioned whether McDaniel would continue calling plays following the upcoming bye week, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh remained noncommittal.
“We’ll look at everything,” Harbaugh said, according to Noah Furtado of The Athletic.
If Los Angeles opts for a leadership change on offense, current pass game specialist and former New York Jets head coach Adam Gase is expected to take over play-calling duties, Alper reported.
The Chargers now enter their scheduled bye week with questions looming over their offensive leadership. Meanwhile, the Chiefs will prepare to take their unblemished record on the road next week for an interconference matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
