LAS VEGAS — Three weeks after sitting among the NFL’s unbeaten teams, the Las Vegas Raiders find themselves at an uncomfortable crossroads. A 33-30 home loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday dropped Las Vegas to 3-3, capping a three-game slide that has quickly halted early-season momentum and revealed stubborn execution flaws against upper-tier competition.
The defeat mirrored the Raiders’ Week 4 setback to the Kansas City Chiefs, highlighting a lingering gap between staying competitive and closing out victories, according to The Sporting Tribune. While the performance showed marked improvement over a 45-17 rout by the New England Patriots in Week 5, head coach Klint Kubiak dismissed any comforting takeaways. “We are not satisfied with any moral victories,” Kubiak said in his postgame press conference, adding that the team must learn to finish games.
Stalls inside the red zone
The primary culprit behind Sunday’s loss was an inability to convert scoring chances into touchdowns. Las Vegas converted only two of its five trips inside the 20-yard line into touchdowns, according to Raiders Wire. Three drives culminated in short field goals by Matt Gay, including a 15-play march that reached the Buffalo 2-yard line before stalling.
Pre-snap miscues also derailed promising situations. Center Tyler Linderbaum was flagged for a false start on fourth-and-1 late in the second quarter, an infraction Kubiak noted has occurred three times this year, calling the repeated penalties destructive. Quarterback Kirk Cousins expressed frustration with the missed opportunities, telling reporters that settling for kicks in high-scoring contests inevitably proves costly.
Second-half slumps and defensive regression
The game turned sharply after halftime. Entering the third quarter tied 13-13, Las Vegas went three-and-out on its opening possession before linebacker Dorian Williams intercepted a Cousins pass thrown toward Mike Washington. Buffalo capitalized on the short field when Josh Allen escaped pressure to connect with Keon Coleman for a 12-yard score, a throw that tied Allen with Jim Kelly for Buffalo’s career passing touchdown record, Raiders Wire reported.
Buffalo blanked the Raiders 10-0 in the third quarter. According to SB Nation, Las Vegas has been outscored by 26 points in the third quarter this season, the widest such deficit in the league. Meanwhile, coordinator Rob Leonard’s defense failed to record a single takeaway on Sunday. After generating nine turnovers during their 3-0 start, the Raiders have forced just one takeaway over the last three weeks while surrendering at least 30 points in three consecutive games for the first time since 2019, SB Nation reported.
Personnel adjustments and what lies ahead
Despite the setback, Las Vegas uncovered offensive bright spots. With Buffalo deploying double coverage to neutralize rookie star tight end Brock Bowers for most of the contest, Michael Mayer capitalized with seven receptions for a career-high 95 yards, while wide receiver Tre Tucker delivered five catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns, Raiders Wire reported. In the backfield, rookie Mike Washington injected life by rushing for 43 yards on nine attempts, contrasting with starter Ashton Jeanty’s 22 yards on 10 carries.
The Raiders now prepare to host the 2-4 Los Angeles Rams at Allegiant Stadium, with both clubs fighting to prevent their seasons from unraveling further, The Sporting Tribune reported.
