Dakota Johnson’s third night as host of “Saturday Night Live” came with a bonus guest who wasn’t on the bill: Taylor Swift.
The pop superstar walked into Johnson’s opening monologue on the Oct. 3 episode, playing the weary sounding board for the actress’s romantic misadventures. She came back at the end of the broadcast carrying a birthday cake for the actress, whose 37th birthday was Sunday.
The surprise capped a big week for both women. Johnson’s thriller “Verity” reached theaters the day before the show, and the two recently appeared together in the music video for Swift’s single “Patient Zero.”
‘I’m not your therapist, actually’
Johnson, who first hosted in February 2015 and came back in January 2024, opened by poking fun at her own filmography. On her last visit, she said, she was promoting “Madame Web,” and she was “still promoting it” because the 2024 superhero movie “hasn’t made any money yet.”
Then she turned to her love life. Since her previous stint, she said, she had been through “two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians.” She called “Verity” “a psychosexual erotic thriller” and suggested that dating musicians was much the same. “Some people leave concerts with merch, and I leave concerts with a two-and-a-half-year relationship,” she said.
Her friends, Johnson insisted, “don’t judge me for dating these men.” That set up the entrance of “my literal therapist,” and Swift stepped out to a roar from the Studio 8H audience.
“I’m not your therapist, actually,” Swift said. She described a friend who turns up at her house once a week holding an empty wine bottle and offering her some, then sprawls on the couch to overshare, with Swift offering the occasional “Damn, that’s crazy.” When Johnson protested that she had manners, Swift explained that those evenings end with a Pedialyte and a ride home courtesy of her security team.
Johnson wrapped up the bit by calling her dating history “a public service” that saves women “a lot of money on Zoloft,” then told America, England, “parts of Ireland” and Cleveland that they were welcome. The Cleveland mention was a wink at Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end and Swift’s husband, who was raised in that area, and it drew a quick “Woo-woo!” from Swift, Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter reported.
Cake at the goodnights
Swift jumped the gun during the monologue, squealing “It’s her birthday!” before the clock had struck midnight, Variety noted. When the cast gathered onstage for the closing goodnights, she made it official by carrying out a cake for the host.
Fans had been primed for a cameo. During Swift’s pre-taped “Law & Order: SVU” bit at last month’s Emmy Awards, a “Saturday Night Live” emblem was visible on a bulletin board behind her. Many viewers had to wait for the payoff, though: NBC stations in several markets, including Los Angeles, pushed the show back after a USC-Washington football game ran long, Variety reported.
It was her first appearance on the show since October 2023, when she popped up to introduce Ice Spice, that night’s musical guest. Swift has hosted the show once, in 2009.
The ‘Patient Zero’ connection
Swift directed the “Patient Zero” video, in which Johnson and Colin Farrell play a rich couple whose marriage is coming apart while Swift haunts the story as a ghostly figure. The clip premiered during the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27. Hours before “SNL” aired, Swift posted an eight-minute “expanded” cut with behind-the-scenes footage on Apple Music. The song is one of four new tracks on “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.” Released Sept. 25, the reissue expands her 2025 album.
The night’s musical guest, Baltimore hardcore band Turnstile, made its “SNL” debut with “Birds,” which won the Grammy for best metal performance in February, and came back later in the show to play “I Care” and “Dull” as a medley.
What’s next
