KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The 14th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers relied on a relentless defensive effort and a grinding ground attack Saturday night to knock off Alabama 26-10 before a sellout crowd of 101,915 at Neyland Stadium.
The victory marks Tennessee’s third consecutive home triumph over its bitter Southeastern Conference rival. After the clock expired, spectators poured onto the field and lit traditional victory cigars to celebrate the program’s most successful stretch in the rivalry since the mid-2000s, Knox News reported.
Defensive dominance sets the tone
Tennessee’s defense stifled an Alabama offense that entered the evening averaging 44.2 points per contest, good for third in the country. The Crimson Tide, ranked No. 7 by Knox News and The Tennessean but listed at No. 6 by Fox News, were limited to 201 yards of total offense, including 54 yards on the ground, Fox News reported.
The Volunteers forced a season-best four turnovers and kept Alabama off the scoreboard on its first three possessions, forcing a net loss of 19 yards. Jeremiah Telander generated a strip-sack that Tyree Weathersby recovered, and Dejuan Lane followed shortly after with an interception of Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell.
Alabama suffered its first red-zone failure of the year late in the first half when Lane scooped up a loose ball on fourth down at the Volunteers’ 11-yard line, Knox News reported. The Crimson Tide had converted all 28 previous red-zone trips into points this season.
Tennessee took a 12-10 lead into halftime behind four field goals from Cooper Ranvier, who connected from 41 and 34 yards out after earlier drives stalled inside the Alabama 20-yard line.
Ground game and steady quarterbacking seal the win
Running back DeSean Bishop shouldered the offensive burden in the second half, finishing with 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries. Bishop’s performance lifted him to fifth on Tennessee’s all-time career list with 29 rushing touchdowns, surpassing several school legends, according to Knox News.
“I believe that I get stronger as the game goes on, you know, and my old line helped me out creating holes for me to run through,” Bishop said in remarks reported by Sports Illustrated. “If it’s going to run the ball 30 times a game, man, so be it.”
Sophomore quarterback George MacIntyre, making his second collegiate start in place of freshman Faizon Brandon, completed 21 of 31 passes for 197 yards with one interception. MacIntyre orchestrated a key nine-play, 60-yard scoring drive late in the third quarter that ended with a five-yard touchdown run by Bishop to push the lead to 19-10.
“It was a dream come true for sure,” MacIntyre said, according to Sports Illustrated. Reflecting on a second-quarter interception that led to Alabama’s only touchdown, he added, “Dealing with adversity, you know, my whole life, my whole career, kind of primed me for that, for that moment to be able to shake it off, bounce back.”
Rivalry milestones and what comes next
With the win, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel improved his record against Alabama to 3-3, including an undefeated 3-0 mark in Knoxville. Alabama dropped to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play, suffering consecutive regular-season defeats for the first time since 2007, Fox News reported.
Tennessee improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Kayin Lee put the finishing touches on the win by intercepting Russell in the end zone during the final minute.
The Volunteers travel to Columbia, South Carolina, on Oct. 24 to face the South Carolina Gamecocks at Williams-Brice Stadium. Alabama will look to rebound as it continues its conference schedule.
